Refit of The Queen's Rowbarge Gloriana

Heads turned in back in November 2020 when we welcomed a very prestigious and unique vessel to Fox’s – Her Majesty The Queen’s Rowbarge, Gloriana.

Built in 2012 to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the 18-oared row barge has an all wood structure including fully gilded ornate carvings and bright work. Gloriana is the first Royal barge built for over 250 years. However, her design and build replicate structures and techniques that have changed little since the clinker built long-boats of the Viking age.

This very special vessel travelled by road from the River Thames to Fox’s for a carefully managed refit. Fox’s state-of-the-art heated workshops have the capacity for vessels up to 100ft long, so at 88ft Gloriana fitted comfortably and safely in her temporary home whilst work took place.

Gloriana’s bright work was stripped back to bare timber in preparation for some detail modifications prior to re-varnishing. All other painted surfaces were carefully prepared and re-coated in matching Awlgrip.

Once all the deck modifications and new coatings were complete a team of specialist craftsmen undertook the intricate (and fascinating) task of traditional gilding, using 23 carat gold leaf.

After re-assembly of the vessel, Gloriana emerged from Fox’s workshop looking truly resplendent in the Spring sunshine! She was loaded to transport for the journey back to her home waters where she was re-commissioned.

It has been an honour to work on such a beautiful and prestigious vessel, we look forward to seeing her back in service.
