Custom 40 repaired in preparation for a busy racing schedule

This well-known Custom 40 racing yacht, named RoC, was built in 1986 by Kesteloo B.V.’s shipyard, specifically for the Observer Single Handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR).

RoC went on to compete in three OSTAR’s winning first and second place in the 40 foot class. She has an impressive racing portfolio having taken part in  three ‘Azores And Back’s (AZAB), three Round British Isles and Ireland races, The Bermuda One Two, The Solo 1000 mile offshore race and at least one Fastnet.

Years of hard work on the race course had taken its toll on RoC and she came to Fox’s needing a little bit of TLC. Sections of her original ply deck and cockpit had suffered with water ingress and new timber was required, the repair process also allowed for some redesign of key details. The vessel’s construction is unique and the combination of a fabricated alloy hull and timber deck/superstructure means the repairs had to be carefully considered and executed.

As you can see from the photos perished wood was removed and re-built with marine plywood, prior to being sheathed in glass and bonded with West System’s two-part (resin and hardener) epoxy system before being filled, faired and painted.

RoC's owner plans to race her in the East Anglian Offshore Racing Association (EAORA) series and some of the RORC double-handed races alongside his daughter.
