140-year-old Dutch barge gets a makeover

The team here at Fox’s love a challenge and we were delighted to be asked to survey and refit this majestic 25 metre Dutch Barge named Aleida.

Built in 1882 as a sailing barge Aleida was converted to a motor ship circa 1967 before being made into a residential vessel in 1995.

The photos in the gallery show Aleida’s progress from arrival here to departure. To prepare the vessel for new paintwork she was Ultra High Pressure (UHP) water blasted by our contractors Aquablast. The 60 degree water was delivered at an extreme high pressure of 45,000psi to remove the Bitumen in preparation for epoxy coating.

The 140 year old lady was then moved undercover for dry blasting and application of epoxy primer and final coatings, using Jotun’s paint system, in a temperature controlled environment. Repairs to hull plating below the waterline and the cabin sides was carried out, along with new anode studs and anode replacement. Finally, having finished all cosmetic paintwork, the vessel was re sign written as per original.

The last photo shows Aleida’s dramatic transformation. She has been re-launched at Fox's and will soon be heading to her home berth in Woodbridge where we are sure she will be much admired.
